The Field Conference of Pennsylvania Geologists offered three full sponsorships that included registration and lodging to eligible students. Pre-conference field trips were scheduled for Thursday October 1. One trip was billed as a slow descent into the earth on a bright yellow portal bus, entering the old Slope #190. Unlike last year's death march in the Hammersley wilderness, the plan was to hike the Shades of Death Trail, roughly 3 miles total, along scenic Sand Spring Run.
